Lately ive been having a desire to take an adult ballet class, It would get me moving and add some discipline to my daily life. some structure i feel...being male, there are some feelings of shyness or feeling out of place in a class.
I was wondering if any could offer some advice or share some thoughts about how i might enter into such a class...

I did it. I think it's a great idea. The most important thing is finding the right class. If you find any class for adults, even if it is (most likely) populated exclusively by females, they will be delighted to have you and you will receive special attention. Be serious about it and it will pay off. Ballet is one of the most difficult arts, but very rewarding. You'll always feel great physically after a class.

Let's face facts: no matter what dance you decide to study, nearly any class is going to be predominantly filled with women. Once you get past that little bit of insecurity, it;s not going to be a problem. You will get some attention, more in some classes, less in others. But if the physical discipline is appealing then go with ballet or any other dance form that appeals to your aesthetics.

It looks like im going to give Ballet a try, ive done some dance, so movement is something i really enjoy. though none of my dance has been highly structured and disciplined as Ballet.now ill have to get some tights, the school here requires men to wear black tights and white T shirt...

Lots of online dance stores sell tights for men - try discountdancesupply.com, allaboutdance.com, justforkix.com, or go to a capezio store if you have one near you. Men's tights are heavier and much more opaque than women's tights. Get a pair of black ballet slippers that fit your foot well - you don't want them to be loose, but you don't want them so tight that your toes are crunched up in them. You'll probably have to sew your own elastic into them.

And don't forget that plenty of NFL players have been required by coaches to take ballet class because it helps hone balance and agility. When I was a teenager, we had a whole football team come in for one of the beginning classes. They seemed to be much more at ease when they realized they weren't going to have to sashay around the room trying to look like butterflies.

Since you've had some dance experience, you'll probably have a leg up (no pun intended) on someone who hasn't had any dance - ballet is just more rigorous and structured than most other dance styles.

Congrats on your choice and have fun with it!

I danced ballet for 12 years and it was the best thing I've ever done. it will kick your ass and make you feel like a fool but it's worth ever hard lesson. get a dance belt (aka the violator), it's like a jock, very important and the first thing you put on. try not to drool or stare or fall in love to often. when you dance dance like a MAN. don't give up and good luck.

        > rare dances that doesnt cross or blur the lines of the male and female

        Huh? Can you rephrase that?

I don't have a problem distinguishing male and female dancers in performance (in any genre)-- and with regards to male and female characters in dance, I can recall very few characters who were androgynous-- even if it is a male dancer playing a female role or a female dancer playing a male role.
