So how many of you are actively dancing? Do you do it professionally or for fun?
I was taking it for fun in the last four years but stopped [I used to dance when I was a kid and had missed it]. I'm thinking of taking it up again in the summer.

Re: Actively dancing?
Tue, January 20, 2004 - 8:15 AMfor some time I toyed with the idea of studying at one of the studios..good form of exercise and such (if my brain knows Im working out itll find a reason not to). But my knees arent in the best of shape anymore (thanks to my job) and I was advised against it by some fellow burlesquers thatd know. In the meantime...Im sitting here thumbing through my couple of books on the NYCB and the ABT, which are next to a stack of seasonal bulletins from NYCB (free source of photos)...so...does that qualify me to hang here? an tell me how to post a pic Ill post my portfolio pic of my balloon ballerina. -

Re: Actively dancing?
Tue, January 20, 2004 - 8:37 AMYes. I am.
I LOVE TO DANCE!!!!!
I love ballet the best though. I've taken this form since i was 5 years old. I have taken many breaks, especially the most recent one that lasted, what, 5 years!?!?!? I had to have my daughter and raise her to this point before i could go back into it. I have been actively taking ballet 2x's per week in a local studio with teenagers!!! It's hard to find an adult class locally. I also take ocasional Dunham classes in the city. Very rare, but soooo much fun. I love modern, but this form really integrates ballet and is very demanding on your body. I LOVE IT!
I also have been taking belly dance in two seperate locations and since these two classes have ended for the time i will be keeping myself busy with a salsa class. We've got a great NYC instructor. i am very excited!
I'm also about to go very BROKE....dancing burns a hole in my pocket....really BAD! -

Re: Actively dancing?
Wed, January 21, 2004 - 10:03 PMI envy you! You're probably one of those natural dancers, unlike me. :) I love ballet but have never been a natural at it. I'm jealous of the dancers with beautiful turnout, long limbs, and gorgeous extensions [i'm told i have beautiful feet and arches, though!]. I took ballet when I was a kid for several years, long enough to start pointe, then I quit and didn't start dancing again till about four years ago. I wanted to branch out a little and took jazz/modern for a couple of years and thought it was great fun; got strong enough to go on pointe again but found myself too chicken to dance away from the bar -- except for echappes!
You're right about the going broke thing, though. That's the reason I quit. But I'm really thinking of going back!

Re: Actively dancing?
Wed, January 21, 2004 - 9:56 PMWhy not? You can think of it job shadowing, following people around who do to get an idea of what it's like.
So have you ever danced at all? If not, there's a really good book called The Joffrey Ballet School's Ballet-Fit geared toward adults who like ballet and would like to take classes. It's very informative and answers many of the more common questions aspiring adults might have about dance. -

Re: Actively dancing?
Thu, January 22, 2004 - 10:18 PMassuming you mean me...actually nope...never danced. Never really got the bug in me til a couple of years ago. Being a career procrastinator, I just never *got to it*. Now however that Im being evaluated for one if not a pair of meniscal tears, thats a BIG factor in me hanging up the idea to go for it.
Couple years ago when I went to Steps On Broadway to check things out, the girl on the counter was most understanding about my concerns for my shaky even then knees...since then Ive had more than one experienced dancer tell me not to go with it til theres a disposition with my knees.

Thu, January 22, 2004 - 10:22 PMsorry to hear that, i imagine that's very frustrating when you have the urge to dance. so do you know how serious the tearing is?

Re: Actively dancing?
Sat, January 24, 2004 - 8:47 PMI think that song is fred Astaire but I'm not sure....
I have been dancing since i was 4 years old, and haven't stopped since!! I currently teach tap, ballet, jazz, hip- hop, and creative dance at a local studio & wouldn't dream of doing anything else!!! The pay isn't great, but the rewards come from the kids! I started taking an adult "tap teacher's " class in Bethlehem, pa. about 3 years ago & it has really kicked my tap dancing up a notch!! You're never too experienced to take class & learn new styles! I try to get to NYC as much as i can, but it really takes up time & alot of $$$$., so unfortunately I don't get there much. I'm always looking for new festivals & workshops, so please post!! -

Re: Actively dancing?
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 7:29 AMthey contract up when you dont use them??
I recently found from a fellow burlesque performer that pointe shoe components are wood and plaster besides satin...sheesh I never KNEW that. Then I heard her walk in them...
Anyway...girl on pointe makes for grown balloonhedz shedding tears of joy... -
-
Re: Actively dancing?
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 1:41 PMWood and plaster? and what year were these shoes made? ;) Actually pointe shoes are traditionally made of layers of cardboard and paste, but now they even have shoes made of elastopolymers so that they're like dancing in athletic shoes.
But when you hear dancers running and jumping in pointe shoes it's easy to think maybe they are made of blocks of wood! -

Re: Actively dancing?
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 5:54 AMThe only pointe shoes I know of being constructed of that are these vintage things I saw on a website. Look up "vintage Pointe shoes" on Google's "images" section. You'll see them.
WELL, I, of course, know that's how they made them YEARS ago but not at all these days.

Wed, February 11, 2004 - 12:05 PMI took dance classes for the last 18 years of my life, I love it. I stoped taking classes in august of last year because I didnt have the time between work and school, but I am seriously thinking of going back this summer.I also use to teach ballet, tap, and jazz to 2-5 year olds.

Re: Actively dancing?
Sun, February 29, 2004 - 6:26 PMActively dancing? Does three hours a day, five to six days per week qualify? Between classes (belly dance and Latin) and rehearsals (my two SF Bay Area companies, Dance Romanesque and Bel Canto Dance), I can hardly put in enough hours at my "day" job, which I would love to quit eventually and just, choreograph and dance nonstop!
